Overview

Prior study is not a prerequisite - you just need a passion for the subject matter!

It's a bit of a cliché these days, but unfortunately it's also 100% true. The problem for most of us is that we would prefer to treat it as a cliché - everything we love is somehow "bad" for us. However, there is some good news. This fantastic new study pack has been specially written to help us make healthy choices about what we eat without taking all the fun out of our lives. It does this by giving us the knowledge to manage our diet proactively so that we make conscious choices about what we put inside what Buddhists call "The Body Temple", rather than just blindly dumping all the wrong "stuff" into our mouths.

The issue with diet is not simply that we have to cut out all sugars, fats and processed foods. We just need to make sure that we get the right vitamins and minerals, and in the right combination and quantity to ensure that this incredible machine we use all day every day remains healthy and serviceable without requiring major maintenance or refit. It's more than a “meat suit”, despite the way we treat it. If we get our diet right, we can still have chocolate, alcohol and a curry from time to time without setting ourselves up for a stroke, heart attack or major disease. It's all about balance, and this course will help you achieve that.

MATERIALS

One of the key benefits of studying with My Distance Learning College is that, unlike other distance learning providers, we deliver the entire package of learning materials in a single dispatch.

This enables our students to get a real feel for the overall structure and content of the study pack, and chart their progress much more effectively. The modular method of delivery favoured by other providers fragments the learning process and actively prevents students from moving faster through sections they are more confident with, or taking more time over the deeper concepts that require more thought and comprehension.

REQUIREMENTS

A reasonable level of literacy is required, but there are no entry restrictions.

You just need a keen interest in the subject, and will ideally have studied the subject or ancillary disciplines at a lower level if you want to progress quickly.

On obtaining feedback and comment you will either move on to the next assignment or review and rework the one you submitted.

If I fail an assignment can I retake it?

Is there a word count for my assignments?

Although a word count is not given for the tutor marked assignments, it is important that you demonstrate to your tutor that you have fully understood the questions; a comprehensive Study Guide is included with your materials. Many students start slowly at first, but your tutor will give guidance to help and encourage you to improve.

Do I need a computer to complete my studies?

What is healthy eating and food hygiene?

Many people suffer with different eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and obesity. When people suffer with eating disorders they will need specialist help from a dietician or nutritionist. Dieticians work with many people with different problems. They help people change eating habits to ensure their health is as it should be.

When did you decide to work in healthy eating and food hygiene?

When I was younger I was teased at school for being obese, I had always suffered with my weight and eating habits. It was not until I began at college that I made the decision to lose weight drastically. I joined the college gym and had advice from those that worked in the gym for healthy eating. In my first year of college (10 months) I had managed 5.5 stone, and had never felt better. I knew I still had a long way to go but I knew now the hard work paid off. In my second year of college I decided this was something that I wanted to help others with as I knew personally what the struggles could be with weight issues. I went on to study human nutrition at university.

What does a dietician do on a daily basis?

Dieticians can be based in a hospital or work within the community, role can vary greatly. In a hospital you would usually work within one area, such as a children’s health where you may run clinics in order to help those with special dietary needs.

When working in the community you would be working as part of a team with other professionals where you visit individuals to offer advice and support to clients. You may also be involves in activities or events that are run to raise awareness for health.

What are the entry requirements to become a dietician?

In order to become a dietician you would need a degree in Dietetics or human nutrition. To qualify at degree level 5 GCSE’s A*-C are usually required (including Maths, English and Science). Three A-Levels (or equivalent) are also required. To work specifically in diet and nutrition a scientific A-Level would be needed.

What can I expect to earn in working in diet and nutrition?

Starting salaries start from £21, 388 - £27, 901 a year

Experiences dieticians can earn up to £40, 558 a year
