Overview

Prior study is not a prerequisite - you just need a passion for the subject matter!

Probably the best career opportunity in the last 20 years". This is how a leading employment consultancy recently described the marketplace for Wedding and Event Planners in the UK.

Why?

Because there are more parties and events happening today than ever before. The increasingly sophisticated public expect them to be more polished, better organised and more exciting. In short they want more “bang for their buck”.

Weddings are seriously big business today; the industry itself is worth over £4 billion per year. The average couple take around 250 hours to plan their dream day, and the average wedding in the UK costs between £15,000 and £20,000. More and more couples are turning to wedding planners to help them put together their dream day as people find they have less and less free time. Plus the geographical spread of families make it more difficult for “mum and dad” to take it on.

Professional Wedding Planners have become very popular in the USA, and as with most things American, are now finding their way across the “pond”. The time to get involved in this lucrative business is now, before it really takes off and competition becomes fierce.

Want to get involved with planning weddings or managing events? If you’re a “Party Animal” and a good organiser who can keep their head while all around are losing theirs, then this may be for you. If you love working with people and enjoy the adrenaline-rush of seeing a plan you’ve devised being successfully carried out, it could even set you up with a new career . . . .

MATERIALS

One of the key benefits of studying with My Distance Learning College is that, unlike other distance learning providers, we deliver the entire package of learning materials in a single dispatch.

This enables our students to get a real feel for the overall structure and content of the study pack, and chart their progress much more effectively. The modular method of delivery favoured by other providers fragments the learning process and actively prevents students from moving faster through sections they are more confident with, or taking more time over the deeper concepts that require more thought and comprehension.

REQUIREMENTS

A reasonable level of literacy is required, but there are no entry restrictions.

You just need a keen interest in the subject, and will ideally have studied the subject or ancillary disciplines at a lower level if you want to progress quickly.

When you have successfully completed your studies you will receive a certificate of achievement from Focus Awards.

This is a non-regulated qualification which is endorsed by Focus Awards under the FQP scheme. They are not nationally recognised qualifications; on successful completion of your studies you will receive a Focus Awards Certificate of Achievement and a Diploma from MyDistance Learning College.

Focus Awards is regulated as an Awarding Organisation by Ofqual, the qualification regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Non-regulated qualifications endorsed under the FQP scheme are ideal for professionals required to demonstrate commitment to CPD (Continuous Professional Development), and for those wanting to gain specialist knowledge of a particular subject.

Who is this for?

You will receive a thorough grounding in all aspects of massage, from learning the basics of anatomy and skin care through to detailed information on massage techniques, client consultation, and alternative massage techniques. The extensive section on the effects and benefits of massage is one of our students' favourites, and the materials also teach you the necessary business aspects of working both in a salon or for somebody else, and the considerations you need to take into account. In fact, there is little (if anything!) the learning materials leave out; there is no stone left unturned. By the time you complete your studies you'll be raring to go!.

What will I cover?

Your studies will cover the areas of study listed above through detailed exploration of the subject matter. You will also receive tasks and prompts for further personal exploration and research to carry out so that you can gauge how much you have learned. There are plenty of examples to help you but personal research is a prerequisite, so be prepared to use your initiative to fully answer the assignments.

Is it accredited?

This is a non-regulated qualification endorsed by Focus Awards under the FQP scheme.

Although the learning materials are comprehensive and informative, we do expect you to carry out your own investigations. After all, if you are not prepared to do your own research, you should be asking yourself if this is the right subject choice for you!

Your work is not graded; assignments are simply identified as Pass, Fail or Referred. For assignments not passed at first attempt, your tutor will advise on the improvements to be made to obtain a Pass on a reworking. A certificate of achievement will be issued by Focus Awards on successful completion of all the assignments.

Is this a nationally recognised qualification?

No, this is a non-regulated qualification which has been endorsed by Focus Awards under their FQP scheme

What will my studies prepare me for?

The learning materials and accompanying tasks will help you to develop the necessary knowledge and confidence to successfully complete the tutor marked assignments. The tasks are designed to encourage you to apply your knowledge, and help you to develop relevant research and academic writing skills.

How do I send in my work?

You email your assignments one at a time for marking. This enables your tutor to properly assess the standard and style of your work for each section, and give you feedback which will be used on your next assignment; a process of continuous improvement. On obtaining feedback and comment you will either move on to the next assignment or review and rework the one you submitted.

If I fail an assignment can I retake it?

Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you some pointers as to where you could improve.

What do I receive once I enrol?

We will send you ALL the learning materials. This consists of a folder and Study Guide, plus a package of bonus materials and items to enhance your learning experience.

Is there a time limit or any deadlines?

Your studies should be completed within 12 months, but can be extended for a small fee if your tutor supports your request. As a rough guide, depending on your circumstances and commitment, you can complete your studies in about 100 study hours. There are no other deadlines to meet.

Is there a word count for my assignments?

Although a word count is not given for the tutor marked assignments, it is important that you demonstrate to your tutor that you have fully understood the questions; a comprehensive Study Guide is included with your materials. Many students start slowly at first, but your tutor will give guidance to help and encourage you to improve.

Do I need a computer to complete my studies?

Yes, you will need access to email and the internet to submit assignments and do research. Most students also find word-processing their assignments is much more convenient than writing by hand.

Are the learning materials paper-based or online?

If you select the hardcopy option above, your materials are paper-based and come in a sturdy folder. Alternatively, start your studies immediately and save £££’s by studying exclusively online, with full access to your learning materials and tutor support, studying has never been easier!

What is a Wedding planner?

A wedding planner mainly helps couples to design and plan their wedding, usually from start to finish. Wedding planners have good communication skills as well as being able to organise sufficiently with good problem solving skills. Wedding planners may not be responsible for entire wedding days but for small parts of it.

Why did you decide to become a wedding planner?

I did not decide to become a wedding planner until I was 24 years of age. I had always enjoyed arranging nights out with my friends, weekends away where I wanted to make people happy. I would always have a strict itinerary. One of my friends had asked me to be a bridesmaid at her wedding and wanted me to be involved with much of the planning. I already enjoyed organising different occasions, but this was something I had really taken interest in. I then decided I was going to take up on the idea of becoming a wedding planner.

What do wedding planners do on a day to day basis?

Wedding planners need to be creative and have different themes for different couple’s needs. On a day to day basis wedding planners may be required to meet different couples to discuss their wedding ideas and budgets. You may have to meet (and research) with different caterers, florists or designers to discuss prices. You would also be required to be present on the day of weddings to ensure the day runs smoothly.

What qualifications do I need to become a Wedding Planner?

There are no set qualifications needed to become a wedding planner. Experience is usually gained from other areas of employment to help people become a Wedding planner. Many people decide to become Wedding planners is they have worked in catering/event management or if they have been involved in a family member or friend’s wedding planning. If you are thinking about becoming a wedding planner it may be wise to be involved in organising local charity events and to take a short course in Wedding planning which can be done through private companies.

What can I expect to earn to become a Wedding planner?

Starting salary with wedding planning business - £16,000- £20,000

Experienced planners - £25,000+

Those who are self-employed Wedding Planners can charge different rates, this may be a fixed or hourly rate. It will different between different planners.
