Overview

Prior study is not a prerequisite - you just need a passion for the subject matter!

Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care is perfect for anyone wanting to gain a deeper understanding of the health and social care sector, and is excellent CPD material for those already working in a related field.

Throughout your studies, you will cover a wide range of highly relevant subject matter from a strategic and business perspective in addition to a care-centred one.

STRUCTURE

There are a number of essential components, which can be explored by visiting the Outline tab at the top of this page. As you can see, the subjects covered are wide and varied. Our students tell us that this is one of the main reasons the materials are so exciting and absorbing; they are given a real grounding in many of the peripheral issues and subjects that affect their work.

The opening section on Communication is one such case in point. We all need to be able to communicate effectively, but there is an argument for doing so much more clearly and succinctly when dealing with people in care. Indeed, the quality of care given may hinge on that. In addition to all of the key elements and integrated disciplines - such as sociology, biology, nutrition, ethics and the law - fundamental principles of understanding and dealing with addiction, abuse, mental health issues and many more are covered in detail.

LEGISLATION

One of the more detailed and in-depth areas of the learning materials deals with the impact and effect of legislation. Legislation affects us all in every part of our lives, and the caring professions have their own rules, regulations and legal compliance requirements to deal with.

You are provided with expert interpretation and guidance on all of the legislative instruments you’re likely to come into contact with, including the NHS and Community Care Act 1990, The Suicide Act, The Children Act (1989 and 2004), The Childcare Act 2006, and diverse issues covered by legislation such as the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Human Rights Act.

MATERIALS

One of the key benefits of studying with My Distance Learning College is that, unlike other distance learning providers, we deliver the entire package of learning materials in a single dispatch.

This enables our students to get a real feel for the overall structure and content of the study pack, and chart their progress much more effectively. The modular method of delivery favoured by other providers fragments the learning process and actively prevents students from moving faster through sections they are more confident with, or taking more time over the deeper concepts that require more thought and comprehension.

REQUIREMENTS

A reasonable level of literacy is required, but there are no entry restrictions.

You just need a keen interest in the subject, and will ideally have studied the subject or ancillary disciplines at a lower level if you want to progress quickly.

Non-Regulated Qualification Endorsed by Focus Awards under the FQP Scheme

This is a non-regulated qualification endorsed by Focus Awards under their Focus on Quality Provision (FQP) Scheme.

Focus Awards is a member of the Federation of Awarding Bodies (FAB) and is regulated by Ofqual. Established 2011, Focus Awards is founded on three core values – Honesty, Integrity and Fairness – that underpin everything they do.

The FQP scheme is designed to give endorsement to non-regulated qualifications in a wide range of subjects. On successful completion you will receive a Focus Awards Certificate of Achievement and a Diploma from My Distance Learning College.

Although the materials are comprehensive and informative, we do expect you to carry out your own investigations. After all, if you are not prepared to do your own research, you should be asking yourself if this is the right subject choice for you!

Although, there are no entry requirements, you do need a reasonable level of literacy to be able to both understand the concepts introduced, and get the most out of the materials.

When you have successfully completed your studies you will receive a certificate of achievement in Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care from Focus Awards.

This is a non-regulated qualification which is endorsed by Focus Awards under the FQP scheme. They are not nationally recognised qualifications; on successful completion of your studies you will receive a Focus Awards Certificate of Achievement and a Diploma from MyDistance Learning College.

Focus Awards is requalted as an Awarding Organisation by Ofqual, the qualification regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Non-regulated qualifications endorsed under the FQP scheme are ideal for professionals required to demonstrate commitment to CPD (Continuous Professional Development), and for those wanting to gain specialist knowledge of a particular subject.

Who is this for?

Anybody with a reasonable standard of general education will be able to cope with the academic demands. If you can read and write well enough to complete a job application, and have a good grasp of basic maths (add, subtract and divide) you should have no problems. The learning materials are written in simple everyday language and the answers to your assignments will be completed in the same style. In addition to the comprehensive learning materials provided, you will receive a Study Guide to assist you, and, of course, you will have the support of your tutor.

What will I cover?

Your studies will cover the areas of study listed above through detailed exploration of the subject matter. You will also receive tasks and prompts for further personal exploration and research to carry out so that you can gauge how much you have learned. There are plenty of examples to help you but personal research is a prerequisite, so be prepared to use your initiative to fully answer the assignments.

Is it accredited?

This is a non-regulated qualification endorsed by Focus Awards under the FQP scheme.

Although the learning materials are comprehensive and informative, we do expect you to carry out your own investigations. After all, if you are not prepared to do your own research, you should be asking yourself if this is the right subject choice for you!

Your work is not graded; assignments are simply identified as Pass, Fail or Referred. For assignments not passed at first attempt, your tutor will advise on the improvements to be made to obtain a Pass on a reworking. A certificate of achievement will be issued by Focus Awards on successful completion of all the assignments.

Is this a nationally recognised qualification?

No, this is a non-regulated qualification which has been endorsed by Focus Awards under their FQP scheme

What will my studies prepare me for?

The learning materials and accompanying tasks will help you to develop the necessary knowledge and confidence to successfully complete the tutor marked assignments. The tasks are designed to encourage you to apply your knowledge, and help you to develop relevant research and academic writing skills.

How do I send in my work?

You email your assignments one at a time for marking. This enables your tutor to properly assess the standard and style of your work for each section, and give you feedback which will be used on your next assignment; a process of continuous improvement. On obtaining feedback and comment you will either move on to the next assignment or review and rework the one you submitted.

If I fail an assignment can I retake it?

Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you some pointers as to where you could improve.

What do I receive once I enrol?

We will send you ALL the learning materials. This consists of a folder and Study Guide, plus a package of bonus materials and items to enhance your learning experience.

Is there a time limit or any deadlines?

Your studies should be completed within 12 months, but can be extended for a small fee if your tutor supports your request. As a rough guide, depending on your circumstances and commitment, you can complete your studies in about 100 study hours. There are no other deadlines to meet.

Is there a word count for my assignments?

Although a word count is not given for the tutor marked assignments, it is important that you demonstrate to your tutor that you have fully understood the questions; a comprehensive Study Guide is included with your materials. Many students start slowly at first, but your tutor will give guidance to help and encourage you to improve.

Can I cancel if I do not think this is right for me?

Yes, you can return your materials within 7 days in accordance with the terms and conditions on our web site: www.mydistance-learning-college.com.

Do I need a computer to complete my studies?

Yes, you will need access to email and the internet to submit assignments and do research. Most students also find word-processing their assignments is much more convenient than writing by hand.

Are the learning materials paper-based or online?

If you select the hardcopy option above, your materials are paper-based and come in a sturdy folder. Alternatively, start your studies immediately and save £££’s by studying exclusively online, with full access to your learning materials and tutor support, studying has never been easier!

Why did you decide to become a nurse?

I moved into nursing quite ‘late on’. I left school at 16 and worked as a receptionist for 15 years at a surgery; although it was something I was good at, I felt that I needed a change and I wanted to be able to help people.

I knew that I wanted to become a nurse but I was unsure if it would even be possible because I did not have any qualifications in the area. I enrolled on an evening course at my local college, to study health and social care level 2, and also asked a nurse colleague at work if I could shadow her on my days off. After completing my level 2 studies, I moved on to level 3 and had the opportunity to get work experience in a range of different settings. It was during this experience that I realised that I preferred working with adults, so when I applied to university, it was for a BSc (Hons) in adult nursing.

I had to leave work in order to study as it was a 3 year full-time course; I was sad to leave my colleagues but I also knew I was moving in the right direction.

I spent 50% of my time on placement, which I loved and the remaining time attending university lectures and workshops.

How much can I earn?

The starting salary for graduate nurses is typically £21,388, rising to £27,901, although this is likely to be higher for those living in London.

For nurses at senior level (bands 7-9 in the NHS), salaries range from £30, 764 - £98,453.

Working as a nurse can involve working unsociable hours, but payment is made for this to NHS staff. For those working on a Sunday or public holidays for example, salaries are paid at time plus 60%.

Career Progression

When nurses first begin in their careers, they are subject to a supported probationary period; after successfully completing this, the majority of nurses in acute hospital settings can progress from staff nurse positions to junior sister / charge nurse within 2 – 3 years.

Depending on the development of management skills and specialist knowledge, there are also opportunities for progression to specialist clinical roles, or matron, or director of nursing positions.
