Overview

Despite the market for Teaching Assistants growing consistently, with new people entering the profession almost daily, there is still a shortage of appropriately trained individuals to take up the available places. In terms of job prospects, there are few roles to compete.

However, competition is fierce. Although demand continues to outstrip supply, schools are constantly looking out for applicants who have already completed training or study in the subject, so that they don't have to supply it.We have several very popular Teaching Assistant Courses for our students to choose from. Whether you are currently enjoying a position as a Teaching Assistant, or want to become one, the course you want to take will be listed below.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Perhaps surprisingly, the Teaching Assistant Course has no entry requirements, other than personal motivation, desire and a genuine interest in the subject matter. As long as you also have a good general standard of education, you will gain immense benefit from it.

You should be aware that once you progress into a school environment, or indeed any other organisation that involves access to children, you may be required to undergo a Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check.

SHOW ME THE MONEY . . .

To give you an idea of the typical salaries earned by Teaching Assistants around the country, the following is a simple table of rates currently in force for "unqualified teachers", which include Teaching Assistants. To find out exactly what you can earn in your particular area of the country, you would simply need to contact your local council:

COURSE MATERIALS

One of the key benefits of studying with My Distance Learning College is that, unlike other distance learning providers, we deliver the entire package of course materials in a single dispatch.

This enables our students to get a real feel for the overall structure and content of the course, and chart their progress much more effectively. The modular method of delivery favoured by other providers fragments the learning process and actively prevents students from moving faster through sections they are more confident with, or taking more time over the deeper concepts that require more thought and comprehension.

Focus Award ACCREDITED AT LEVEL 3

This course has been accredited through the Focus Awards “Focus on Quality Provision” (FQP) Scheme. The course content and depth of study required have been benchmarked against Level 3 on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF).

Focus Awards is requalted as an Awarding Organisation by Ofqual, the qualification regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. FQP programmes are designed to give formal recognition to courses in a wide range of subjects that fall outside the QCF. They are not qualifications; on successful graduation from the course you will receive a Focus Awards Certificate of Achievement and a Diploma from My Distance Learning College.

FQP courses are ideal for professionals required to demonstrate commitment to CPD (Continuous Professional Development), and for those wanting to gain specialist knowledge of a particular subject.

Although the course is comprehensive and informative, we do expect you to carry out your own investigations. After all, if you are not prepared to do your own research, you should be asking yourself if this is the right subject choice for you!

No Final Exam . . . .

If the prospect of exams frightens the life out of you, there is even more good news. There is no final exam! The low price of the course includes dedicated tutor support, regular critique and feedback, and all assignments are marked by one of our professional tutors. You can even pay by instalments if funds are tight.

What are you waiting for? Book your course today and start improving society and your local community by making a difference in the life of a child. It really could be that important.

Can anyone do the course?

Anybody with a reasonable standard of general education will be able to cope with the academic demands of the course. If you can read and write well enough to complete a job application, and have a good grasp of basic maths (add, subtract and divide) you should have no problems. The course materials are written in simple everyday language and the answers to your assignments will be completed in the same style. In addition to the comprehensive course materials provided, you will receive a Study Guide to assist you, and, of course, you will have the support of your tutor.

What will the course cover?

The course covers the areas of study listed above through detailed exploration of the subject matter. You will also receive tasks and prompts for further personal exploration and research to carry out so that you can gauge how much you have learned. There are plenty of examples to help you but personal research is a prerequisite at this level, so be prepared to use your initiative to fully answer the assignments.

Is the course accredited?

This course has been accredited through the Focus Awards “Focus on Quality Provision” (FQP) Scheme. The course content and depth of study required have been benchmarked against Level 3 on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF).

Although the course is comprehensive and informative, we do expect you to carry out your own investigations. After all, if you are not prepared to do your own research, you should be asking yourself if this is the right subject choice for you!

What does the course prepare me for?

The course materials and accompanying tasks will help you to develop the necessary knowledge and confidence to successfully complete the tutor marked assignments. The tasks are designed to encourage you to apply your knowledge, and help you to develop relevant research and academic writing skills.

This course has been accredited through the Focus Awards “Focus on Quality Provision” (FQP) Scheme. The course content and depth of study required have been benchmarked against Level 3 on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF). Your work is not graded; assignments are simply identified as Pass, Fail or Referred. For assignments not passed at first attempt, your tutor will advise on the improvements to be made to obtain a Pass on a reworking. Certificates will be issued by Focus Awards on successful completion of all the assignments.

How do I send in my work?

You email your assignments one at a time for marking. This enables your tutor to properly assess the standard and style of your work for each section, and give you feedback which will be used on your next assignment; a process of continuous improvement. On obtaining feedback and comment you will either move on to the next assignment or review and rework the one you submitted.

If I fail an assignment can I retake it?

Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you some pointers as to where you could improve.

What do I receive once I order the course?

We will send you ALL the course materials. This consists of a folder and Study Guide, plus a package of bonus materials and items to enhance your learning experience.

Is there a time limit or any deadlines?

The course should be completed within 12 months, but can be extended for a small fee if your tutor supports your request. As a rough guide, depending on your circumstances and commitment, the course can be completed in about 100 study hours. There are no other deadlines to meet.

Is there a word count for my assignments?

There is a suggested word count given for the tutor marked assignments, but it is more important that you demonstrate to your tutor that you have fully understood the questions; a comprehensive Study Guide is included with the course. Many students start slowly at first, but your tutor will give guidance to help and encourage you to improve.

What if I don’t like the course? Can I send it back?

Yes, if you are not happy with the course and feel it is not for you, you can return it within 7 days in accordance with the terms and conditions on our web site: www.mydistance-learning-college.com.

Do I need a computer to take the course?

Yes, you will need access to email and the internet to submit assignments and do research. Most students also find word-processing their assignments is much more convenient than writing by hand.

Is the course paper-based or online?

The course is paper-based and comes in a sturdy folder. Alternatively, start your course immediately and save £££’s by studying exclusively online, with full access to your course materials and tutor support, studying has never been easier!

Why did you decide to become a teaching assistant?

I was initially working as a lunchtime supervisor at my son’s school; this was ideal for me as I had a daughter who was in nursery part-time, so the hours were ideal. When my daughter moved up to primary school, I wanted to spend more time working at the school as I really enjoyed working with the children and all of my colleagues.

I enrolled on a course to train to become a teaching assistant; I completed my theory work and carried out working as a lunchtime supervisor. The head teacher at the school was very supportive and let me assist in year 3, so I had the opportunity to work on a more one-to-one basis with the children and different members of staff.

I was very fortunate that a position was available at the school, so when I completed my training, I was offered the job.

What will I do?

Working as a teaching assistant will typically involve:

• Helping children who require extra support

• Carrying out administrative tasks (e.g. ordering supplies)

• Getting the classroom ready for lessons

• Clearing away equipment at the end of lessons

• Assist the teacher in managing class behaviour

How much can I expect to earn?

The starting salary for a teaching assistant is typically around £12,000 per year, although this will depend on the area of the country you are in, and the number of hours you work.

How many hours a week will I work?

Typical working hours are 30-40 per week.
