Focus Awards is requalted as an Awarding Organisation by Ofqual, the qualification regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Anybody with a reasonable standard of general education will be able to cope with the academic demands of the course. If you can read and write well enough to complete a job application, and have a good grasp of basic maths (add, subtract and divide) you should have no problems. The course materials are written in simple everyday language and the answers to your assignments will be completed in the same style. In addition to the comprehensive course materials provided, you will receive a Study Guide to assist you, and, of course, you will have the support of your tutor.

What will the course cover?

The course covers the areas of study listed above through detailed exploration of the subject matter. You will also receive tasks and prompts for further personal exploration and research to carry out so that you can gauge how much you have learned. There are plenty of examples to help you but personal research is a prerequisite at this level, so be prepared to use your initiative to fully answer the assignments.

Is the course accredited?

Although the course is comprehensive and informative, we do expect you to carry out your own investigations. After all, if you are not prepared to do your own research, you should be asking yourself if this is the right subject choice for you!

What does the course prepare me for?

The course materials and accompanying tasks will help you to develop the necessary knowledge and confidence to successfully complete the tutor marked assignments. The tasks are designed to encourage you to apply your knowledge, and help you to develop relevant research and academic writing skills.

This course has been accredited through the Focus Awards “Focus on Quality Provision” (FQP) Scheme. The course content and depth of study required have been benchmarked against Level 3 on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF). Your work is not graded; assignments are simply identified as Pass, Fail or Referred. Certificates will be issued by Focus Awards on successful completion of all the assignments.

How do I send in my work?

You email your assignments one at a time for marking. This enables your tutor to properly assess the standard and style of your work for each section, and give you feedback which will be used on your next assignment; a process of continuous improvement. On obtaining feedback and comment you will either move on to the next assignment or review and rework the one you submitted.

If I fail an assignment can I retake it?

Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you some pointers as to where you could improve.

What do I receive once I order the course?

We will send you ALL the course materials. This consists of a folder and Study Guide, plus a package of bonus materials and items to enhance your learning experience.

Is there a word count for my assignments?

There is a suggested word count given for the tutor marked assignments, but it is more important that you demonstrate to your tutor that you have fully understood the questions; a comprehensive Study Guide is included with the course. Many students start slowly at first, but your tutor will give guidance to help and encourage you to improve.

What is forensic science?

Forensic involves analysing evidence that is brought from a crime scene such as tyre marks, finger prints, hair, fluids etc. These are then used to picture the crime scene together and to find the offender.

Why did you decide to work in forensic science?

From being young I had always enjoyed watching crime programmes or dramas and had an interest in how the offenders were brought to justice. It was something that I knew I wanted to do as a lifelong career. Going through school I had a particular interest in biology and chemistry. When I began college I still wanted to become involved in forensic science so I took science related topics to enable me to study Forensic Science at degree level.

What does a forensic scientist do on a day to day basis?

Forensic scientists can work in the lab or can be called to the scene of the crime to collect all evidence possible to then be analysed in the lab. It would involve analysing different DNA samples, material, drugs, hair etc. and comparing these to other samples. It may also involve retrieving data from a computer to view evidence. Forensic scientists may also be required to give small parts of evidence in court.

What are the entry requirements to become a forensic scientist?

You would be required to have a degree in forensic science or in science related subjects such as chemistry, biology or medical sciences.

What can I expect to earn as a forensic scientist?

Starting salaries are from around £20,000 a year

Experienced scientists can earn from £25,000 to £40,000 a year

Senior scientists can earn from £40,000+
