What is forensic science?

Forensic involves analysing evidence that is brought from a crime scene such as tyre marks, finger prints, hair, fluids etc. These are then used to picture the crime scene together and to find the offender.

Why did you decide to work in forensic science?

From being young I had always enjoyed watching crime programmes or dramas and had an interest in how the offenders were brought to justice. It was something that I knew I wanted to do as a lifelong career. Going through school I had a particular interest in biology and chemistry. When I began college I still wanted to become involved in forensic science so I took science related topics to enable me to study Forensic Science at degree level.

What does a forensic scientist do on a day to day basis?

Forensic scientists can work in the lab or can be called to the scene of the crime to collect all evidence possible to then be analysed in the lab. It would involve analysing different DNA samples, material, drugs, hair etc. and comparing these to other samples. It may also involve retrieving data from a computer to view evidence. Forensic scientists may also be required to give small parts of evidence in court.

What are the entry requirements to become a forensic scientist?

You would be required to have a degree in forensic science or in science related subjects such as chemistry, biology or medical sciences.

What can I expect to earn as a forensic scientist?

Starting salaries are from around £20,000 a year

Experienced scientists can earn from £25,000 to £40,000 a year

Senior scientists can earn from £40,000+
