Anybody with a reasonable standard of general education will be able to cope with the academic demands of the course. If you can read and write well enough to complete a job application, and have a good grasp of basic maths (add, subtract and divide) you should have no problems. The course materials are written in simple everyday language and the answers to your assignments will be completed in the same style.

In addition to the comprehensive course materials provided, you will receive a Study Guide to assist you, and, of course, you will have the support of your tutor.

What’s actually in the course?

The course covers the areas of study listed above through detailed exploration of the subject matter. You will also receive tasks and prompts for further personal exploration, plus research to carry out. This will also help you to keep track of how much you have learned. There are plenty of examples in the course materials, but personal research is expected at this level, so be prepared to use your initiative to fully answer the assignments.

Is the course accredited?

The course is accredited by CACHE, who are regulated by the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, The Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales, and the Council for Curriculum Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland. This CACHE Level 3 Certificate in Dementia Care (QCF) Course attracts a Credit Value of 21 on the QCF system on successful completion.

What will I get from the course materials?

The course materials and accompanying tasks will help you to develop the necessary knowledge and confidence to successfully complete the tutor marked assignments. The tasks are designed to encourage you to apply your knowledge, and help you to develop relevant research and academic writing skills.

What level is the course at?

This is a CACHE Level 3 Certificate in Dementia Care (QCF) Course.

How do I send in my work?

You submit your assignments one at a time for marking through our iLearn it Easy online portal. This enables your tutor to properly assess the standard and style of your work for each section, and give you feedback which will be used on your next assignment; a process of continuous improvement. On obtaining feedback and comment you will either move on to the next assignment or review or rework the one you submitted.

What happens if I fail an assignment?

Don't worry, your tutor give you some pointers as to where you could improve, and will ask you to resubmit your assignment once you have reworked it.

We will send you ALL the course materials. This consists of a folder and Study Guide, plus a package of bonus materials and items to enhance your learning experience.

Is there a time limit or any deadlines?

The course should be completed within 12 months, but can be extended for a small fee if you require more time. As a rough guide, depending on your circumstances and commitment, the course can be completed in about 100 study hours. There are no other deadlines to meet.

Is there a word count for my assignments?

There are generally no word counts given for the tutor marked assignments, but it is important that you demonstrate to your tutor that you have fully understood the questions; a comprehensive Study Guide is included with the course. Many students start slowly at first, particularly if it's some time since they carried out any study, but your tutor will give guidance to help and encourage you to improve.

Will the course help me get a job?

The course is Nationally recognised as a qualification which would therefore mean you would be qualified to work with people with dementia on completing the course. Employers would recognise and accept this qualification.

What is working in dementia care?

Working with people with mental health problems requires patience and good communication. Mental health carers/nurses would work in hospitals and in the community to help those with a mental health issue and their families. Mental health nurses are very patient and non-judgemental and are able to create positive relationships with their patients.

When did you decide to work with those with dementia?

When I was a teenager my grandma suffered with Alzheimer’s disease. This was the first push to wanting to work in mental health as I saw the patience and care the nurses had for my grandma. She really trusted in them and let them support her. I wanted to do the same for someone else’s family.

What day to day activities are involved with working with people with dementia?

Whether working in a hospital or in the community the duties are very similar. You would be expected to assess patients and support them the best way you could. If patients are on medication, it is your responsibility to ensure they take it. You may encourage patients to take part in activities that would help them such as therapy or take up a simple hobby that could help.

What qualifications do I need to work with those with mental health issues?

Five GCSE’s would be needed A* - C Level in Maths, English and Science. Thee A- levels would be needed, one to include a science to enable you to go on to degree level. A three year degree in Mental Health would need to be taken for employment in this area. Within your time study at degree level you will work in hospitals and in the community (supervised) on placements to gain the relevant experience.

What can I expect to earn when working with people with mental health issues?

Starting salaries can be - £21,388 - £27,901 a year

Experience nurses - £25,500 - £40,500
