What is zoology?

Zoology is the relationship between science and animals. In the work place you would be involved in a wide range of areas from welfare of animals to carrying out research.

Why did you want to work in zoology?

From being young I had always wanted to be a vet. However when I got to college I realised I no longer wanted to work as a vet however, I was still very interested in working in animals. I had also taken Biology at college which was another area of interest. I had looked at my options with the career advisors within college and they suggested Zoology and it was a combination between the two. It seemed very daunting at first, but it did seem perfect. I went on to study Zoology at degree level.

What does a Zoologist do on a day to day basis?

Zoologists have many responsibilities from the welfare of animals to carrying out extensive research. It may involve looking at difference species of animals and monitoring their existence, studying animals in their natural habitat and making reports on research.

What are the entry requirements to work in zoology?

A degree would be required in zoology, animal ecology or animal behaviour. In order to undertake a degree five GCSE’s would be required A*-C level and three A-levels (one including biology). Please be aware different universities have different entry requirements.

What can I expect to earn as a zoologist?

Starting salaries can be between £21,000 - £25,000 a year.

Those in research can earn £25,000 -£30,000 a year

Ask a Question

Q.

Hi. I am fascinated by the animal kingdom and want to undertake this course. Could you tell me what formats the course materials are in? I have a physical disability and have spiral bound books, and audio books for my Open University courses. Also, are you able to help with the funding for this course? Many thanks Sarah Jayne Davies MSc
Asked By Sarah Jayne Davies

A.

Thank you for contacting My Distance Learning College Sarah. If you select the 'Online Only' option, your course materials can be downloaded as a PDF file. However if you select 'Hard Copy' you will receive a folder with all your course materials in there, plus the online version. We are not able to fund any courses I'm afraid.
