COURSE OVERVIEW

What an exciting concept! Today – perhaps more than ever – young people desperately need good role models and mentors. If you've always wanted to be involved in the classroom, helping children to understand how to communicate and interpret this world we've built for them, here's your chance to set out on a highly-rewarding and fulfilling new career.

The government is pushing hard for better adult to child ratios in the classroom. Money is being pumped into schools across the country to help them take on more Teaching Assistants, as this is regarded as the quickest, most cost-effective way to improve the staffing situation. So, in these difficult times, you will never have a better opportunity to get yourself qualified to operate in this vibrant, positive educational environment.

SHOW ME THE MONEY . . .

The following table shows the salary ranges currently in force for "unqualified teachers", which include Teaching Assistants. To find out exactly what you can earn in your particular area of the country, you would simply need to contact your local council:

Inner London £19,893-£29,088

Outer London £18,789-£27,992

London Fringe £16,856-£26,052

Elsewhere (England and Wales) £15,817-£25,016

ENTRY-LEVEL COURSE

Our brand-new and revised Higher Level Teaching Assistant course will fully prepare you to take your place alongside a qualified teacher in any school in the UK. You will gain a real insight into education by studying the course, and it will provide you with the skills and knowledge to be able to take part in a wide range of classroom support activities. It will help you gain employment, and possibly whet your appetite to become a fully Qualified Teacher.

The course has been fully revised to reflect the recent changes in the teaching environment, and the wider educational world. It specifically provides information about how teachers plan and prepare lessons, deliver their subject matter, and assess students. Your role as an HLTA can be crucial in facilitating those processes.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course examines the "core learning structure", and how these skills form a vital part of teaching and working with children. It also looks at the ways you will support classroom practices, the school and its management. You will gain insight into supporting pupils with disabilities and special educational needs, as well as the basics of literacy and numeracy. The "higher level" part of the course title prepares you to carry out specialist roles and duties within specific parts of the curriculum. You could, for example, construct lesson plans alongside delivering your usual Teaching Assistant duties in support of the class teacher and pupils.

The course addresses all of the challenges you will encounter in your new career, and is divided up into 10 highly structured and comprehensive modules that deliver the knowledge you will need to overcome them. The modules cover all aspects of the syllabus and have been specifically written to help you meet the 33 professional standards laid down by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). This will enable HLTAs who want to progress to QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) to have a clearer understanding of the additional knowledge and skills required.

Clicking on the “Snapshot” tab above reveals a full and detailed programme of the modules studied.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Perhaps surprisingly, the Higher Level Teaching Assistant Course has no entry requirements, other than personal motivation, desire and a genuine interest in the subject matter. As long as you also have a good general standard of education, you will gain immense benefit from it.

You should be aware that once you progress into a school environment, or indeed any other organisation that involves access to children, you may be required to undergo a Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check.

COURSE MATERIALS

One of the key benefits of studying with My Distance Learning College is that we deliver the entire package of course materials in a single dispatch. This enables our students to get a real feel for the overall structure and content of the course, and chart their progress much more effectively.

The modular method of delivery favoured by other providers breaks up and interrupts the learning process. It actively prevents students from moving faster through sections they are more confident with, or taking more time over the deeper concepts that require more thought and comprehension.

PLUS: Students of My Distance Learning College automatically get FREE access to the acclaimed “iLearnitEasy” coursework management system, which makes submitting assignments, getting feedback and critique, and interacting with other students on the course for mutual support, an absolute breeze! Push-button simplicity . . .

Focus Award-Accredited at Level 4

This course has been endorsed by Focus Awards through their Focus on Quality Provision (FQP) Scheme. The content and depth of study required have been benchmarked at Level 4.

Focus Awards is a member of the Federation of Awarding Bodies (FAB) and is regulated by Ofqual. Established 2011, Focus Awards is founded on three core values – Honesty, Integrity and Fairness – that underpin everything they do.

The FQP scheme is designed to give endorsement to non-regulated qualifications in a wide range of subjects. On successful graduation you will receive a Focus Awards Certificate of Achievement and a Diploma from My Distance Learning College.

Although the course is comprehensive and informative, we do expect you to carry out your own investigations. After all, if you are not prepared to do your own research, you should be asking yourself if this is the right subject choice for you!

NO FINAL EXAM . . . .

If the prospect of exams frightens the life out of you, there is even more good news. There is no final exam!

The low price of the course includes dedicated tutor support, regular critique and feedback, and all assignments are marked by one of our professional tutors. You can even pay by instalments if funds are tight.

What are you waiting for? Book your course today and start improving society and your local community by making a difference in the life of a child. It really could be that important.

When you have successfully completed this course you will receive a Level 4 Certificate of achievement in Higher Level Teaching Assistant from Focus Award. Once you have this certification you will be able to further enhance your employability in the sector, industry or area of interest by continuing your studies to the next level if you wish.

This course has been accredited through the Focus Awards “Focus on Quality Provision” (FQP) Scheme. The course content and depth of study required have been benchmarked against Level 4 on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF).

Focus Awards is requalted as an Awarding Organisation by Ofqual, the qualification regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. FQP programmes are designed to give formal recognition to courses in a wide range of subjects that fall outside the QCF. They are not qualifications; on successful graduation from the course you will receive a Focus Awards Certificate of Achievement and a Diploma from My Distance Learning College.

FQP courses are ideal for professionals required to demonstrate commitment to CPD (Continuous Professional Development), and for those wanting to gain specialist knowledge of a particular subject.

Can anyone do the course?

Anybody with a reasonable standard of general education will be able to cope with the academic demands of the course. If you can read and write well enough to complete a job application, and have a good grasp of basic maths (add, subtract and divide) you should have no problems. The course materials are written in simple everyday language and the answers to your assignments will be completed in the same style. In addition to the comprehensive course materials provided, you will receive a Study Guide to assist you, and, of course, you will have the support of your tutor.

What will the course cover?

The course covers the areas of study listed above through detailed exploration of the subject matter. You will also receive tasks and prompts for further personal exploration and research to carry out so that you can gauge how much you have learned. There are plenty of examples to help you but personal research is a prerequisite at this level, so be prepared to use your initiative to fully answer the assignments.

Is the course accredited?

This course has been accredited through the Focus Awards “Focus on Quality Provision” (FQP) Scheme. The course content and depth of study required have been benchmarked against Level 4 on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF).

Although the course is comprehensive and informative, we do expect you to carry out your own investigations. After all, if you are not prepared to do your own research, you should be asking yourself if this is the right subject choice for you!

What does the course prepare me for?

The course materials and accompanying tasks will help you to develop the necessary knowledge and confidence to successfully complete the tutor marked assignments. The tasks are designed to encourage you to apply your knowledge, and help you to develop relevant research and academic writing skills.

This course has been accredited through the Focus Awards “Focus on Quality Provision” (FQP) Scheme. The course content and depth of study required have been benchmarked against Level 4 on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF). Your work is not graded; assignments are simply identified as Pass, Fail or Referred. For assignments not passed at first attempt, your tutor will advise on the improvements to be made to obtain a Pass on a reworking. Certificates will be issued by Focus Awards on successful completion of all the assignments.

How do I send in my work?

You email your assignments one at a time for marking. This enables your tutor to properly assess the standard and style of your work for each section, and give you feedback which will be used on your next assignment; a process of continuous improvement. On obtaining feedback and comment you will either move on to the next assignment or review and rework the one you submitted.

If I fail an assignment can I retake it?

Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you some pointers as to where you could improve.

What do I receive once I order the course?

We will send you ALL the course materials. This consists of a folder and Study Guide, plus a package of bonus materials and items to enhance your learning experience.

Is there a time limit or any deadlines?

The course should be completed within 12 months, but can be extended for a small fee if your tutor supports your request. As a rough guide, depending on your circumstances and commitment, the course can be completed in about 100 study hours. There are no other deadlines to meet.

Is there a word count for my assignments?

There is a suggested word count given for the tutor marked assignments, but it is more important that you demonstrate to your tutor that you have fully understood the questions; a comprehensive Study Guide is included with the course. Many students start slowly at first, but your tutor will give guidance to help and encourage you to improve.

What if I don’t like the course? Can I send it back?

Yes, if you are not happy with the course and feel it is not for you, you can return it within 7 days in accordance with the terms and conditions on our web site: www.mydistance-learning-college.com.

Do I need a computer to take the course?

Yes, you will need access to email and the internet to submit assignments and do research. Most students also find word-processing their assignments is much more convenient than writing by hand.

Is the course paper-based or online?

The course is paper-based and comes in a sturdy folder. Alternatively, start your course immediately and save £££’s by studying exclusively online, with full access to your course materials and tutor support, studying has never been easier!

What is a higher level teaching assistant?

A higher level teaching assistant has a similar role to a teaching assistant, however they have much more responsibility.

Why did you decide to become a HLTA?

I had worked as a teaching assistant for five years in my local primary school which I very much enjoyed. It was the head teacher that approached me and asked if I would be interested in a promotion and put through a programme to become a higher level teaching assistant. She said that I had been chosen as I had natural leader skills and was competent enough to lead others and teach classes when needed.

What does a HLTA do on a day to day basis?

HLTA’s have very similar roles to teaching assistants in regards to supporting children in the class who need extra support, admin tasks, assisting the class teacher in preparing materials and resources needed for lessons etc. Higher level teaching assistants are also required to be ‘leaders’ and would be required to teach lessons where required to cover the class teacher.

What are the entry requirements to become a HLTA?

In order to have HLTA status you would need the school where you are currently employed to put you through the training programme for HLTA status.

What can I expect to earn as a HLTA?

HLTA’s can earn from £16,000 - £22,000 a year depending on area, employer and responsibilities.
