Course Overview

A glance at the titles of the individual modules (click the ‘Snapshot’ tab above) shows you just what this fantastic course is about. It also provides detailed advice and information to help you properly support children's learning and development.

The teaching and assessment of this course integrates the 4 basic themes of EYFS, which are as follows:

A unique child

Positive relationships

Enabling environments

Learning and development

These 4 themes, which underpin the principles of EYFS and guide the work of all early years practitioners, form the backbone of the course delivery, and are then further broken down into “bite sized chunks" to make study and continuous progress as easy and logical as possible. This approach, also enable students and practitioners to reflect on their own practice. It gives them the opportunity to explore ways of enhancing the way they deliver the framework and improve its effectiveness.

Students undertaking the course for professional development will also need to complete an additional CWDC (Childcare Workforce Development Council) listed qualification, such as the Children and Young People's Workforce (QCF) course, but this course provides you with a solid foundation to help you to progress on to such a programme.

Course Materials

One of the key benefits of studying with My Distance Learning College is that we deliver the entire package of course materials in a single dispatch. This enables our students to get a real feel for the overall structure and content of the course, and chart their progress much more effectively.

The modular method of delivery favoured by other providers breaks up and interrupts the learning process. It actively prevents students from moving faster through sections they are more confident with, or taking more time over the deeper concepts that require more thought and comprehension.

Course Level

This course has been endorsed by Focus Awards through their Focus on Quality Provision (FQP) Scheme. The content and depth of study required have been benchmarked at Level 3.

Focus Awards is a member of the Federation of Awarding Bodies (FAB) and is regulated by Ofqual. Established 2011, Focus Awards is founded on three core values – Honesty, Integrity and Fairness – that underpin everything they do.

The FQP scheme is designed to give endorsement to non-regulated qualifications in a wide range of subjects. On successful graduation you will receive a Focus Awards Certificate of Achievement and a Diploma from My Distance Learning College.

Although the course is comprehensive and informative, we do expect you to carry out your own investigations. After all, if you are not prepared to do your own research, you should be asking yourself if this is the right subject choice for you!

Great news! We are now able to offer a next day delivery service that provides you with a specific time slot by email or SMS for when your course materials will arrive. No more sitting in all day!

Anybody with a reasonable standard of general education will be able to cope with the academic demands of the course. If you can read and write well enough to complete a job application, and have a good grasp of basic maths (add, subtract and divide) you should have no problems. The course materials are written in simple everyday language and the answers to your assignments will be completed in the same style. In addition to the comprehensive course materials provided, you will receive a Study Guide to assist you, and, of course, you will have the support of your tutor.

What will the course cover?

The course covers the areas of study listed above through detailed exploration of the subject matter. You will also receive tasks and prompts for further personal exploration and research to carry out so that you can gauge how much you have learned. There are plenty of examples to help you but personal research is a prerequisite at this level, so be prepared to use your initiative to fully answer the assignments.

Is the course accredited?

Although the course is comprehensive and informative, we do expect you to carry out your own investigations. After all, if you are not prepared to do your own research, you should be asking yourself if this is the right subject choice for you!

What does the course prepare me for?

The course materials and accompanying tasks will help you to develop the necessary knowledge and confidence to successfully complete the tutor marked assignments. The tasks are designed to encourage you to apply your knowledge, and help you to develop relevant research and academic writing skills.

This course has been accredited through the Focus Awards “Focus on Quality Provision” (FQP) Scheme. The course content and depth of study required have been benchmarked against Level 3 on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF). Your work is not graded; assignments are simply identified as Pass, Fail or Referred. For assignments not passed at first attempt, your tutor will advise on the improvements to be made to obtain a Pass on a reworking. Certificates will be issued by Focus Awards on successful completion of all the assignments.

How do I send in my work?

You email your assignments one at a time for marking. This enables your tutor to properly assess the standard and style of your work for each section, and give you feedback which will be used on your next assignment; a process of continuous improvement. On obtaining feedback and comment you will either move on to the next assignment or review and rework the one you submitted.

If I fail an assignment can I retake it?

Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you some pointers as to where you could improve.

What do I receive once I order the course?

We will send you ALL the course materials. This consists of a folder and Study Guide, plus a package of bonus materials and items to enhance your learning experience.

Is there a time limit or any deadlines?

The course should be completed within 12 months, but can be extended for a small fee if your tutor supports your request. As a rough guide, depending on your circumstances and commitment, the course can be completed in about 100 study hours. There are no other deadlines to meet.

Is there a word count for my assignments?

There is a suggested word count given for the tutor marked assignments, but it is more important that you demonstrate to your tutor that you have fully understood the questions; a comprehensive Study Guide is included with the course. Many students start slowly at first, but your tutor will give guidance to help and encourage you to improve.

What if I don’t like the course? Can I send it back?

What is working in early year’s foundation stage?

Working in early years requires early years practitioners help young children in their development, mentally and physically. This is the stage before children enter school full time.

Why did you decide to work in early years?

Before having my son (aged 5) I was working as an admin assistant and after my son was born I decided not to go back into work as my husband’s salary was more than enough for our family income. My son has recently began school in year one, and I became bored very easily and wanted to go back into part time work, however I did not want to go back into admin. A part-time position came up in foundation school in my son’s school which I applied for and took up. It was perfect as I wanted a career change and the hours were to suit.

What is involved in working in early years on a day to day basis?

Early years practitioners would be expected to help with supervising activities the children are doing, be conscious of health and safety, learn children new skills and assist in any outings.

What are the entry requirements to work in early years?

Generally, there are no set requirements to work in early years, employers will generally look for a standard education such as GCSE’s. Some employers may expect a specific qualification such as Level 1 Award in an Introduction to Early Years Settings.

What can I expect to earn working in early years?

Starting salaries start from £10,000 - £12,000 a year
