Course Overview

If you are great with kids, have an ambition to work in the childcare sector, to become a childminder or nanny, or to help out in a nursery, then our brand new Childminding Course really is for you. It's also perfect for anybody considering a new career or setting up a small business in Child Minding.

If you have always wanted to work with children, but didn't know where to start, you've come to the right place!

Our acclaimed Child Minder course helps anybody who wants to work in the childcare sector to gain an accreditation that is recognised throughout the industry. Better still, this fantastic course requires no previous experience, just a passion for the subject!

More and more women are returning to work after having children, and this fact, coupled with the U.K.'s culture of long working hours have led to a huge increase in the need for childcare. Since the ECM initiative was introduced in 2002, there has been an increasing drive for anybody involved with caring for children to get recognised professional training.

A glance at the titles of the individual modules (click the ‘Course Outline’ tab above) shows you just what this fantastic course is about. It covers all of the developmental needs of children in some detail, including their physical needs such as the types of food that are best for them (and nutritional guidelines), the benefits of adequate rest and sleep, learning through play and common childhood illnesses. It addresses their psychological needs too – love, security, positive reinforcement of behaviour – and education.

The course goes on to explore issues surrounding behaviour management, child abuse and the legal framework, and your roles and responsibilities as a care provider, counsellor or parent. It also discusses and informs on the complexities of the various agencies and legislative frameworks in place to protect children. Developing positive working relationships, and the subtleties of communicating with children are also covered.

The final section addresses the business aspects of working as a childminder, including deeper explanation of the legal responsibilities mentioned earlier, the need for registration with appropriate authorities and becoming a member of the NCMA (National Child Minding Association). Health and safety issues, drawing up contracts and agreements, and such matters as how to determine the number of children you can care for in various situations, are dealt with to complete the package

Be aware that whatever you intend to do in the childcare working environment, there are a few additional mandatory elements of training you will need to undertake, no matter who you study or train with. These are laid down by legislation and statute, so are not optional.

However, they are neither difficult nor expensive:

The course itself fulfills the main criteria, that for delivering a recognised introductory syllabus

In addition you will need to undertake a First Aid qualification, which takes only one day and can be done with St John's Ambulance Brigade very cheaply and easily

You will also need to register with Ofsted, and they may need to conduct a home visit if you are providing childcare facilities in your own home. That's it!

They recognise that the student has gained a good knowledge and understanding of a particular subject area, which is appropriate for many job roles. Many of them also result in qualifications on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF), which carry credits that can be accumulated towards higher level qualifications.

NCFE are regulated by the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales, and the Council for Curriculum Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland.

Before enrolling on a course, students should make sure that they are following a course of study that results in formal recognition of their knowledge and skills by a reputable awarding body such as NCFE.

Can anyone do the course?

Anybody with a reasonable standard of general education will be able to cope with the academic demands of the course. If you can read and write well enough to complete a job application, and have a good grasp of basic maths (add, subtract and divide) you should have no problems. The course materials are written in simple everyday language and the answers to your assignments will be completed in the same style.

In addition to the comprehensive course materials provided, you will receive a Study Guide to assist you, and, of course, you will have the support of your tutor.

What’s actually in the course?

The course covers the areas of study listed above through detailed exploration of the subject matter. You will also receive tasks and prompts for further personal exploration, plus research to carry out. This will also help you to keep track of how much you have learned. There are plenty of examples in the course materials, but personal research is expected at this level, so be prepared to use your initiative to fully answer the assignments.

Is the course accredited?

Yes, the course is accredited by NCFE through our IIQ licence. Students will complete all the set assignments using the information the course material provides combined with personal research. To help you get to this stage, there are also a number of self-assessment exercises for each section.

Although the course is comprehensive and informative, we do expect you to carry out your own investigations. After all, if you are not prepared to do your own research, you should be asking yourself if this is the right subject choice for you!

What will I get from the course materials?

The course materials and accompanying tasks will help you to develop the necessary knowledge and confidence to successfully complete the tutor marked assignments. The tasks are designed to encourage you to apply your knowledge, and help you to develop relevant research and academic writing skills.

What level is the course at?

The Learning outcomes for the Childminding course have been benchmarked at Level 3, using Ofqual’s Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF). Your work is not graded; assignments are simply identified as Pass or Referred. For assignments not passed at first attempt, your tutor will advise on any necessary improvements to be made to obtain a Pass on reworking.

Certificates will be issued by NCFE on successful completion of all the assignments.

How do I send in my work?

You submit your assignments one at a time for marking through our iLearn it Easy online portal. This enables your tutor to properly assess the standard and style of your work for each section, and give you feedback which will be used on your next assignment; a process of continuous improvement. On obtaining feedback and comment you will either move on to the next assignment or review or rework the one you submitted.

What happens if I fail an assignment?

Don't worry, your tutor give you some pointers as to where you could improve, and will ask you to resubmit your assignment once you have reworked it.

What do I receive when I order the course?

We will send you ALL the course materials. This consists of a folder and Study Guide, plus a package of bonus materials and items to enhance your learning experience.

Is there a time limit or any deadlines?

The course should be completed within 12 months, but can be extended for a small fee if you require more time. As a rough guide, depending on your circumstances and commitment, the course can be completed in about 100 study hours. There are no other deadlines to meet.

Is there a word count for my assignments?

There are generally no word counts given for the tutor marked assignments, but it is important that you demonstrate to your tutor that you have fully understood the questions; a comprehensive Study Guide is included with the course. Many students start slowly at first, particularly if it's some time since they carried out any study, but your tutor will give guidance to help and encourage you to improve.

Will the course help me get a job?

NCFE, the awarding body, is a highly respected organisation that imposes strict standards on its centres. Employers or further education providers should accept an NCFE certificate.

What if I don’t like the course? Can I send it back?

Why did you become a childminder?

I had been working as a manager in the retail sector for a number of years; when I had my first child, I did not feel ready to go back to that sort of working environment as I always felt very stressed and often worked long hours. I wanted to be able to spend time at home with my daughter and husband but I was unsure what direction to go in. I considered starting my own business but struggled to pin down an idea.

I loved being at home with my daughter, and it was my husband who suggested that I become a childminder. It was ideal because I was already at home with my daughter and we had plenty of space.

I spoke to my local authority about what I needed to do. They explained that I needed to undertake an introductory childcare course (some local authorities require you to complete a course that they run themselves), and that I would also need to do a paediatric first aid course. I completed both of these and was able to apply for registration as a childminder with OfSTED.

What hours would I work as a childminder?

The hours you work are very much set by you, but they would need to fit in with the needs of parents. Some childminders also offer weekend and overnight care for children whose parents who work shifts or unsociable hours.

How much can I expect to earn as a childminder?

Childminders charge on average between £3.63 - £5.42 an hour per child, although this also depends on the area of the country you work in.

You would need to make arrangements for paying tax, insurance and to pay for costs such as toys, equipment and meals. There are start-up grants available in some areas to help with these costs.
