Overview

In a recent study, it was found that most dogs' diets were more than 40% healthier than those of their owners. People really do love their animals in this country, and most rarely even think about justifying what they spend on them. Dogs are as different in character as humans.

From assertive and bold to the timid and shy. The course explains how to recognise the dog's character and psychology, and how to deal with it; essential skills in any professional animal handler. You will also be guided on an exploration of the unique relationship and bond between humans and dogs. “Man's best friend" has deep-rooted history, which is itself interesting, and will give you a stronger insight into why we are, as a species, so heavily dependent on our canine friends.

It sounds crazy, but apart from their mortgage or car payments, their dogs receive the benefit of most owners' disposable income! And here's another very interesting fact, which ties directly into this.

Pet Care (and Pet Products) is one of the few growing sectors in the UK economy today.

FANTASTIC NEWS FOR YOU!

Our brand-new Dog Grooming Distance Learning Course is perfectly placed to get you started in a rewarding new career in animal care. It has been written by one of the country’s leading experts, and is packed with useful and valuable insider knowledge that will give you a real head start as a Dog Groomer.

It gives anybody who has owned a dog, and understands what goes into making that animal happy and healthy, an outstanding opportunity to build on that knowledge and start earning serious money in the Pet Care sector, whether they want to work for somebody else or set up in business on their own.

A glance at the titles of the individual modules (click the ‘Course Outline’ tab above) shows you just what this fascinating and absorbing course is about. It gives you “exactly what it says on the tin” - an in-depth study of the grooming process, the techniques required, and their application to the huge variety of coats you are likely to encounter across the literally hundreds of dog breeds. From the short, wiry coat of the Yorkshire terrier to the long and luxurious pelt of the Afghan hound; all need different techniques, different tools, and an understanding of the highly variable temperaments of the different breeds. In addition to the main object of the course, to teach you how to groom all breeds of dog as quickly and efficiently as possible, we also give significant advice on setting up your own business as a dog groomer, which is invaluable if that's the reason for taking the course, but is also useful in building up a bank of commercial knowledge and business skills which you can apply anywhere.

COURSE MATERIALS

One of the key benefits of studying dog grooming with my distance learning College is that we deliver the entire package of course materials in a single dispatch, this enables our students to get a real feel for the overall structure and content of the course, and chart their progress much more effectively.

The modular method of delivery favoured by other providers breaks up and interrupts the learning process. It actively prevents students from moving faster through sections they are more confident with, or taking more time over the deeper concepts that require more thought and comprehension.

FOCUS AWARD ACCREDITED COURSE

This course has been endorsed by Focus Awards through their Focus on Quality Provision (FQP) Scheme. The content and depth of study required have been benchmarked at Level 3.

Focus Awards is a member of the Federation of Awarding Bodies (FAB) and is regulated by Ofqual. Established in 2011, Focus Awards is founded on three core values – Honesty, Integrity and Fairness – that underpin everything they do.

The FQP scheme is designed to give endorsement to non-regulated qualifications in a wide range of subjects. On successful graduation you will receive a Focus Awards Certificate of Achievement and a Diploma from My Distance Learning College.

NO FINAL EXAM!

If the prospect of exams frightens the life out of you, there is even more good news. There is no final exam!

The low price of the course includes dedicated tutor support, regular critique and feedback, and all assignments are marked by one of our professional tutors. You can even pay by instalments if funds are tight.

Can anyone do the course?

Anybody with a reasonable standard of general education will be able to cope with the academic demands of the course. If you can read and write well enough to complete a job application, and have a good grasp of basic maths (add, subtract and divide) you should have no problems. The course materials are written in simple everyday language and the answers to your assignments will be completed in the same style. In addition to the comprehensive course materials provided, you will receive a Study Guide to assist you, and, of course, you will have the support of your tutor.

What will the course cover?

The course covers the areas of study listed above through detailed exploration of the subject matter. You will also receive tasks and prompts for further personal exploration and research to carry out so that you can gauge how much you have learned. There are plenty of examples to help you but personal research is a prerequisite at this level, so be prepared to use your initiative to fully answer the assignments.

Is the course accredited?

This course has been accredited through the Focus Awards “Focus on Quality Provision” (FQP) Scheme. The course content and depth of study required have been benchmarked against Level 3 on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF).

Although the course is comprehensive and informative, we do expect you to carry out your own investigations. After all, if you are not prepared to do your own research, you should be asking yourself if this is the right subject choice for you!

What does the course prepare me for?

The course materials and accompanying tasks will help you to develop the necessary knowledge and confidence to successfully complete the tutor marked assignments. The tasks are designed to encourage you to apply your knowledge, and help you to develop relevant research and academic writing skills.

This course has been accredited through the Focus Awards “Focus on Quality Provision” (FQP) Scheme. The course content and depth of study required have been benchmarked against Level 3 on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF). Your work is not graded; assignments are simply identified as Pass, Fail or Referred. For assignments not passed at first attempt, your tutor will advise on the improvements to be made to obtain a Pass on a reworking. Certificates will be issued by Focus Awards on successful completion of all the assignments.

How do I send in my work?

You email your assignments one at a time for marking. This enables your tutor to properly assess the standard and style of your work for each section, and give you feedback which will be used on your next assignment; a process of continuous improvement. On obtaining feedback and comment you will either move on to the next assignment or review and rework the one you submitted.

If I fail an assignment can I retake it?

Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you some pointers as to where you could improve.

What do I receive once I order the course?

We will send you ALL the course materials. This consists of a folder and Study Guide, plus a package of bonus materials and items to enhance your learning experience.

Is there a time limit or any deadlines?

The course should be completed within 12 months, but can be extended for a small fee if your tutor supports your request. As a rough guide, depending on your circumstances and commitment, the course can be completed in about 100 study hours. There are no other deadlines to meet.

Is there a word count for my assignments?

There is a suggested word count given for the tutor marked assignments, but it is more important that you demonstrate to your tutor that you have fully understood the questions; a comprehensive Study Guide is included with the course. Many students start slowly at first, but your tutor will give guidance to help and encourage you to improve.

What if I don’t like the course? Can I send it back?

Yes, if you are not happy with the course and feel it is not for you, you can return it within 7 days in accordance with the terms and conditions on our web site: www.mydistance-learning-college.com.

Do I need a computer to take the course?

Yes, you will need access to email and the internet to submit assignments and do research. Most students also find word-processing their assignments is much more convenient than writing by hand.

Is the course paper-based or online?

The course is paper-based and comes in a sturdy folder. Alternatively, start your course immediately and save £££’s by studying exclusively online, with full access to your course materials and tutor support, studying has never been easier!

Why did you become a dog groomer?

I have always looked after and trained dogs; when I was a child, my parents used to take our dogs to shows and I used to love help getting them ready – bathing and brushing them. I also did some work experience at our local dog groomer’s, where I was able to help groom different breeds of dog, all with a variety of coats.

What do you do each day?

As a dog groomer you would first need to discuss with the owner what they would like and any handling requirements. It is important to check the dog thoroughly first for any sore areas, or for issues such as fleas or parasites. If there is an issue which prevents you from being able to groom a dog, it is important that you discuss this with the owner, and refer them to their vet if necessary.

Treatment would involve shaping the dogs coat, shampooing and drying them and giving a final trim. You may also be required to clip a dog’s nails and clean their teeth and ears.

What hours would I work?

Dog groomers typically work Monday – Saturday, although if you were self-employed, you would obviously be able to set your own hours. Many work around 35 hours per week.

What can I expect to earn?

Dog groomers earn around £12,000 - £18,000 a year.

Self-employed dog groomers often charge anywhere between £25 and £70 an hour depending on the treatment being given and breed of dog.
