What is working in end of life care?

Patients who are coming to the end of their life usually due to a terminal illness, this is done by Palliative nurses. The care and support can be given in a hospice, care home or even the patient’s own home if this is where they have decided to end their life.

Why did you decide to work in end of life care?

When I was a teenager I sadly lost my grandma. She had a long term illness which eventually was going to kill her. The support and care that I saw from the staff in the hospice she chose was amazing, they were there for her 24/7. I decided I wanted to give something back from that moment and decided I would work in Palliative care.

What activities are involved on a daily basis in end of life care?

It would involve working with individual patients and their families on a daily basis whether the care is in a hospice, care home or in the patient’s home. It would involve giving medicines and ensuring the patient is comfy. It may also involve giving advice or offering support to the patient’s family as they would also be feeling the strain for the terminal illness.

What are the entry requirements to work in end of life care?

A degree in Nursing would be required to work as a palliative nurse. Five GCSE’s A*-C including maths, English and science. Three A-Levels would also be needed, one including a science related subject.

What can I expect to earn working in end of life care?

Nurses can earn between £21, 388 - £27, 901

Experienced nurses or managers can earn around £25,500 - £40,000 a year
